How often should you refresh your website design?

If your users actively use your website, you should rightly ask yourself how often you should refresh your website design? Up front, we’ll say that there’s no hard-and-fast rule about how frequently you should refresh your design. However, if your website looks remarkably similar to the way it did in 2014, you might want to consider refreshing your design. Here’s why.

Three good reasons to refresh your website design

Designs can date your website. Being dated isn’t the worst thing in the world, but it does say something about your business. No one advocates change for change’s sake, but the truth is that browsers and web server software change. Keeping your design updated means that you can take advantage of the latest improvements in the software the underpins your website. Keep in mind that “improvements” aren’t always visible. Sometimes, software upgrades improve performance and security. A website design that’s behind the times may not keep up with customer software, and savvy customers are likely to notice.

You can improve your performance. Websites are all about performance. Your customers aren’t patient people, and the Web offers a huge range of competitive options. Your website design is a major factor in website performance. Keeping your website design updated means that you can maximize your site’s performance and keep your customers happy. A refreshed website design can also help you take advantage of technological evolutions. For example, the move to mobile computing is well under way. If you haven’t taken the time to redesign your website for mobile users, you’re probably due for an update.

Your business changed. Businesses that survive do so by changing. When your business undergoes a major change, it’s time to redesign your website. A major change might be a new product line or a new acquisition. It might also be a shift in strategy or a branding redesign.
